According to the Collision Prevention Regulations 1972 - Rule 33(a), a ship with a length of 20 metres or more must be equipped with a bell in addition to the whistle. The bell is used as an acoustic signal at anchor or in fog. Various bell systems are available for this purpose: electromechanical, electronic and purely mechanical.
