Kiel // ZÖLLNER becomes Industry Partner for Higher Education Research
ZÖLLNER makes important contribution to mobility transition
Kiel // Rail traffic is a key component for sustainable, environmentally friendly mobility and therefore plays a deciding role in the current mobility transition. One essential building block in furthering rail traffic is the reactivation of already existing but currently retired rail infrastructure. One challenge therewith is the economically viable operation of such rail lines, especially in rural areas. Autonomous rail traffic and intelligent rail technology could offer significant cost reduction. There is a variety of open research questions concerning the development of such autonomous rail vehicles and intelligent rail technology. To find answers to these questions, the REAKT initiative in Schleswig-Holstein is supporting collaborative projects of industry and higher education.
That is why ZÖLLNER has decided to be an integral partner for research projects such as “Intelligent Rail Technology Using Technology for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence” at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel by offering our experiences from the industry. In this case the experience consists of supplying the basic technology for train recognition and the support in collecting data under real life conditions. One long term goal to develop technology that can reliably recognize incoming trains even during bad visibility in order to safely control a rail crossing system, a switch or train signals.
The project was presented to the public in a joined press conference on 04. April. In addition to the technical presentations, there was a tour of the rail line used for testing.
